A World Full of Color


I love visiting my brother in New York City. We like to tease each other about living on opposite ends of the country. He lives in an "Industrial Jungle" and I live in a "Beach Paradise." Both descriptions are obviously exaggerated.

As much as he likes to pick on my California lifestyle, he can't deny that So Cal is full of beautiful nature and full of color - particularly when we've had a rainy year. He lives in Queens surrounded by brown, gray, and beige buildings. The most colorful aspects of his neighborhood are the stoplights.

As I was visiting my brother this past summer, we were passing through Brooklyn and walked alongside a fence full of colored panels. The way the light was passing through theses panels looked like a funky stained glass chapel. This little touch of color brought such life to this Brooklyn Square Park.

Color is an aspect of light that some might take for granted. We see color on our screens everyday and hold nature to these brightened and heightened standards. Light has the power to highlight nature's colorful detail. Taking a moment to notice it is worth the pause.

These are the types of moments that make me feel small in a beautiful way. Our world is a massive, loud, and sometimes crazy place. However, there are moments of simplicity that contain energy and inspiration. This moment inspired me as an artist. Yes the colors are pretty, but it is the way in which the colors stood out in their environment that made me feel inspired. Don't be afraid to stand out in this loud world. Don't be afraid to take pause in life. Don't be afraid to let the world inspire your art. We like to inspire the world with our art and make a difference, but sometimes the world can inspire us.

Week 8-Chanel Kostich-Janet Jackson Concert

This weekend, I went to Hawaii to see Janet Jackson perform live in concert! She was phenomenal! The lighting, the dancing, and the performance was exquisite. Being in Lighting this quarter has made me more aware of lighting and projection that is around me. In this picture, there are multiple lighting cues and specials that are coming from the stage and the balcony. It is amazing to see what they can do in concerts to light up the audience, the stage and the surroundings. As you can see, Janet Jackson has a special on her and the rest of the stage is in a Sangria color which adds warmth to her performance. The audience is also lit up in Sangria, purple and Midnight blue. The specials are in a pale blue color. These three vibrant colors really make Janet Jackson pop on stage and they add color to the front audience. This was a spectacular show and I am so glad I got to see it in Hawaii!

Every step you take. Post 3 Jehbreal Jackson

I wonder if this is how ghosts would appear to us? With the right light and perspective this image emerges.  As stunning as it is transient. I though it important to make a video of it to try and recreate my surprise at its discovery and delicate existence. This reflection fascinated me because it also works as a projection which is a fascinating concept in abstraction. Looking backwards, while projecting forward, while reflecting what is seen in front of you. I was holding a plastic bag and was passing the window where the light was entering. It only happened on this floor, not the one above or the one below and not in the staircase on the other side of the building. This event was specific to this staircase, at this hour, in this position. With every small step I took it changed. With every movement I made it changed. It was fragile in its creation but not in its presence. Makes me curious about how to create this magic (without a gobo). Gobos to me seem a bit to fixed and static

Dougie - Week #10 Passion (My Fireflies)

Lampyridae This quarter I was selected as a choreographer for the New Slate Dance Concert. It was an amazing experience because it allowed me to share my passion for tap dancing. Although I wasn’t a performer  in the show, I was blessed with a cast of talented dancing musicians. It was actually the first time that I’ve been able to work with a large group of “true advance” tappers. Not only did they bring my choreographic vision to life; they inspired me with their commitment, intelligence, unity, and their aspirations to further the exposure of tap at UCI. The name of my piece was entitled Lampyridae, which is the name of the species of insects called fireflies. The dance represented individuality within community togetherness. During this process we all became family. The glass jar in the photo with black and silver text was a gift from my beloved fireflies.
