Week 10: Passion - "Cinephile" by Kent Shinomae

I remember one of the years I was in high school, I went to go see more than sixty movies at the theatre. I consider myself an avid moviegoer and definitely have a passion in going to the theatre to watch a movie, as oppose to watching movies at home. Due to my busy schedule, it's hard to find time to watch television when I'm at home and binge watch for hours on Netflix like many people do. Instead, I plan out times where I can take two hours to go to the movie theatre and have a one of a kind experience in movie watching that can't be done at home. The bright lights at the movie theatre create an exciting atmosphere, where I definitely feel like I'm going to see a "show." The huge sign outside the theatre listing the names of the movies showing are an effective way of inviting people to come watch a movie. Going to the movies is like an event, for example like going to a carnival or a concert. The lights at the theatre give off an idea of spectacle. Specifically at the theatre I went tonight, I loved the lights scattered across the ceilings inside and outside the building. It reminded me of starlight and showed me a connection that I felt between these lights that looked like "stars" and the movie"stars" that I will be watching in the theatre tonight. Buying popcorn and drinks at the concession stand, sitting in reclining seats while watching the movie, and having to wear 3D glasses depending on what type of movie is playing all display something that cannot be experienced except at the movie theatre. To me, going to the movies is like going to Disneyland or a Broadway show. I go to the theatre in hopes to laugh, smile, cry, think, get scared and be thrilled. When I see these lights at majority of the theatres I go to, they prepare me for what I am going to experience, because the movie theatre is a place that helps me forget any of the stress and worries I may be having in my life as I enter the theatre into a different world.

    I completely agree with your post - I have always been connected to movies in a similar way and you describe so well. Great connection to light as well, as part of the experience :)

Week 8-Chanel Kostich-Janet Jackson Concert

This weekend, I went to Hawaii to see Janet Jackson perform live in concert! She was phenomenal! The lighting, the dancing, and the performance was exquisite. Being in Lighting this quarter has made me more aware of lighting and projection that is around me. In this picture, there are multiple lighting cues and specials that are coming from the stage and the balcony. It is amazing to see what they can do in concerts to light up the audience, the stage and the surroundings. As you can see, Janet Jackson has a special on her and the rest of the stage is in a Sangria color which adds warmth to her performance. The audience is also lit up in Sangria, purple and Midnight blue. The specials are in a pale blue color. These three vibrant colors really make Janet Jackson pop on stage and they add color to the front audience. This was a spectacular show and I am so glad I got to see it in Hawaii!

Week 1 - Things Are Looking Up

Chris Burden's " Urban Light " installation at LACMA Ah, the infamous and Instagram-famous "Urban Lights" installation at Los Angeles County Museum of Art...  I found myself hesitant to appreciate these lights; I had seen them plastered all over Instagram too much for my liking. However, as I stood underneath the mass of tall lights, I saw the beauty in them. The striking contrast between black sky and the bright, yet soft, glow of cool light was soothing yet engaging. The way the light bounced and reflected off the posts seemed both unpredictably and strategically designed. There seemed to be one hundred people at the "Urban Lights" installation that night. But as I peered up into the black night sky, the people also faded to dark, and the 202 lights cut the dark with the most ultimate luminosity.  -Brittany

Week #10 - Passion and Possibilities- Brandye Lee

This post is about how grateful I am for Professor Alcaraz sharing his passion for Lighting with our class. As fall quarter draws to a close, I am struck by how quickly one's mind can be influenced and made to grow for the better.  Through our professor's thoughtful instruction about light, my world has opened to seeing and creating new possibilities.  Take the first image below...at first glance, the bright orange and yellow light could possibly be a fire and the thick smoke it produces.  But if we widen the lens, we see the warm light of the sun, beaming through clouds in the sky above.  I love how my perception of light has been piqued through this experience.  Although I know the class is over, I know for sure that I will always now appreciate lighting design, whether divinely created by Mother Nature, or by a talented TA.  So yeah, as I watch this gorgeous Sunday Sunset, the feelings I have are appreciation and excitement for my personal en"light"enment! Onward
