Marc Spaulding_WK #6_Site Specific

Establishing Shot
I chose to visit the Irvine Spectrum Center for my site specific blog. Although I have visited this center a few times in the past, this was my first time seeing the space at night. My overall impression of this center was comparable to being at a resort. I made this assumption based on the manicured palm trees, neatly designed water fountains, and the warm color palette used to paint the exterior store walls. I imagine the design team was trying to create an atmosphere that makes the customers feel as if they were on vacation. In fact, I felt relaxed and unconcerned with time as I walked around the center. If this was their intention, I definitely think they succeeded in creating that experience.
BOSE Exterior

I selected Bose as a store with a successful design concept. The exterior glass was spotless allowing customers to clearly see inside. I observed the awning to be sleek and subtly back-lit with a cool blue hue. As I approached the store, the transparency, knowledge of the store brand, and the polished design convinced me to walk inside.
BOSE Interior
The interior of the store only reaffirmed what I noticed from the outside. I appreciated the openness and organization of the products. The hanging fluorescent light bulbs served as down lighting, giving the room ample brightness. Some other design elements that caught my eye were; the frosted glass cabinets with soft blue lighting, the stainless steel stools, and the orange rug. The inside of the store felt like a well put together professional office. Bose for the win! I feel the design team did a wonderful job of creating a sufficiated environment.

I found Old Navy to be unsuccessful in their attempt to lure customers inside. The usage of plain text is not necessarily a bad choice but, I found their sign boring and basic! In particular, the faded blue hue inside of the simple lettering did not make we want to shop there.

The inside of the store was no better. I felt the long strips of fluorescent lights were reminiscent of an elementary school. The clothing looked out dated and cheap. I assume the design team was trying to create an "all American" affordable shopping experience, but that does not mean your presentation has to look "outdated". I think Target does a good job creating an affordable shopping experience while maintaining a sense of style and quality.

  1. Really nice project post. Your observations are well founded and really give me a sense of each space. Nice analysis of why the lighting works or does not work and how it affects the customer - nice job!

  2. Could the "designers" of Old Navy be any more lazy or cheap when it comes to the lighting effort? Great job finding and calling out this lump of coal!
