Surreality/Mundanity week 5 Jehbreal

This photo fascinated me as the obscurity of the face with light on the shoulders of the subject and a rainbow of color creates a very strong combination of seemingly incongruous elements. It makes me think of what I want to do with Beverly's dance ( a having one part of the stage fully lit with the uninhabited spaces completely dark). The splash of color makes an otherwise naturalistic and kinda spooky photo truly surreal. I am a bit obsessed with surreality as a means to communicate a wide range of emotional complexity. I see it as a way to subvert customary expectations of an audience, casting a certain amount of instability to open the senses and then, in order to truly communicate. I find that people usually don't truly listen when others speak as we get used to using language on a daily basis to convey banalities. This malaise is hindering when someone desperately needs to communicate something and are met with half listening ears. Even profound truths can be conveyed through the mundane. This is why I think that art at its best is the truest form of communication because the maker is truly taking time to be articulate AND expressive while the listener is truly listening.
Very nice post and ideas - you should look up Adolph Appia's scenic designer - they contain some of the gestural qualities you are talking about
