In terms of outdoor activities there are very few experiences that compare to watching a sunset. In this picture I was in the right place at the right time. Although I don't get to the beach often, I always enjoy my time there.
Nice photo but in future posts think more about what the light in the image is doing and how it affects you emotionally. This will get easier as we talk more and more about light.
While sitting in the courtyard in front of the Gillespie studios, I was captivated by what I saw along the pathway before me. A few days prior, we'd just learned all about how to use our dimmers in lighting class. We learned about all the parts; how to connect them to power, each other and the board; and how to focus them. It was a fascinating, yet challenging lesson, as I have never worked with dimmers before, beyond being the subject of their gaze. I'm still learning how to use those shutters! The above image captured so much of what we talked about in our dimmer lesson. The shadow of the tree reminds me of a gobo, and how I'd need to run the barrel in order to further sharpen or blur the image. It made me remember in particular how drawn I am to terrible things being portrayed with pristine beauty in film and painting. I haven't seen it so much in dance and hope to make more work which does this very thing.
Lampyridae This quarter I was selected as a choreographer for the New Slate Dance Concert. It was an amazing experience because it allowed me to share my passion for tap dancing. Although I wasn’t a performer in the show, I was blessed with a cast of talented dancing musicians. It was actually the first time that I’ve been able to work with a large group of “true advance” tappers. Not only did they bring my choreographic vision to life; they inspired me with their commitment, intelligence, unity, and their aspirations to further the exposure of tap at UCI. The name of my piece was entitled Lampyridae, which is the name of the species of insects called fireflies. The dance represented individuality within community togetherness. During this process we all became family. The glass jar in the photo with black and silver text was a gift from my beloved fireflies. Inside is a battery pack covered by a thin sheet of white wrapping tissue paper. It’s connected to a string of w...
