Chanel Kostich-Week 6-Irvine Spectrum




This tall, captivating Christmas tree gave the whole mall a sense of warmth and joy for the upcoming Holiday season! I went to the Irvine Spectrum on Halloween Night and there was something very special about walking around with no people around. Brandeye and I walked around the Spectrum after hours and it was captivating to see how much light there was around us. It was hard for me to choose just one picture so I am showcasing a few that caught my eye. For starters, this Christmas tree is spectacular not just for the height but for the intricacy in light and detail. The saturated colors caught my eye immediately, especially since I love the passionate red and blue colors. Looking at these colors gave me a vision for Jehbreal's piece that I will be working on this coming week as the lighting designer. It is amazing what light can bring to this world.

This picture is a portrait of mist with lights that flashed on and off. There is so much detail in this portrait, from the misty blues to the light right in the middle that looks like a diamond. These lights caught my attention immediately for the majestic beauty that it shows. I can even envision a piece that I may create that starts with mist or fog in a light blue color. My attention to detail has become expansive as I have viewed lights in different places and learned about the value that they serve for us not just on stage but in the world all around us. 


This store is Aerie, and the hanging lights caught my attention because of the warmth it gave to the store. It gives the overall environment a sense of holiday spirit. It also gives the sweaters in the store front a sense of sparkle. It makes me excited for the holidays just walking around all the stores!


This is a hair salon at the Spectrum. I thought it was a cool picture because of the reflection of the Ferris Wheel you can see through the store window if you look closely. I also thought the hanging lights gave a nice touch of decoration and elegance. Overall, I really enjoyed walking around the Spectrum on Halloween night seeing all the beautiful lights and decorations that surrounded the plaza.

For the final week of the lighting blog posts I wanted to post photos from my trip to visit my sister who is expecting! She is waiting to deliver as this moment! We went to a Christmas tree lighting and it was one of the most romantic things I have seen in a long time. The family life was in the air and manifest from a passion of deep love between her love for her husband. I have felt a very Hallmark type of feeling since seeing these lights and I think these trees are very emblematic of this feeling. The jumbling of hues and their vibrancy brings about a strange surreal atmosphere that only enhances surreal feeling. They each have a feeling (especially the blue ones) of their own but combined they truly transform the park into a fantasy land! Looking forward to visiting this place again with my 1 year old niece next year!

Jehbreal Jackson Week 9 Contemplation

I visited the exhibit "American Monument" here at UCI which is a collection of elegiac pieces by artist Lauren Woods in honor of the victims of the systematic injustices of the United States of America. Here is one of the installations where the record players play the last words, actions of the individuals lost to race violence or police violence. The lighting/atmosphere in museums have always intrigued the back of my mind but I rarely every gave attention to the lighting unless the choices were marked and particularly unusual. I see this as a very deliberate choice by designers of exhibits to not distract from the works themselves but to facilitate a calm, but focused attention within the viewer. The warm lighting here is simple (in contrast to other exhibits I've seen in this space) and inviting. The subject matter is harsh so the environment must contrast this to not overwhelm the viewer. ::Week 10:: Beverly Jane Bautista - Passion

Photo by Leandro Glory Damasco Jr.  This weekend I had the honor and the pleasure of working with Savannah Van Leuvan, a first year graduate lighting designer with New Slate 2019. My piece was called "Qualitative Dispute" and this picture captures the final moment of my dance. One of my main passions in life is dance, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to focus and grow in what I love to do. The piece initially starts off in a stark, isolated world where everyone is very robotic with their movements and eventually, the viewer begins to see moments of different people breaking off from the conformity within the group.
